Couple tips for when you get to do a real woodcut:
-if you want a solid background, scenery objects like clouds and stuff allow for an even inking of the board (check out some woodcuts by Durer!)
-and also on a large board I find it easier to keep track of what is being cut by drawing in marker what you want to keep and chiseling out where you did not draw (the raised edges in marker also allow for a visual of how the board will actually print)
